Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) & Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PDD) - Overview

PMS has been described as a recurrent condition characterized by troublesome symptoms 7 to 14 days before menstruation. PMS is estimated to affect between 30% and 40% of menstruating women in the USA with peak occurrences among women in there thirties and forties. In most case the symptoms are relatively mild, however in about 10% of the cases the symptoms can be quite severe. In it's worse case scenario severe PMS with depression, irritability and extreme mood swings is referred to as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PDD). PDD effects less then 5% of the reproductive population.
